Oh boy, folks. I’ve got a good one for you today.
Don’t you just want to dive your entire face right in there? Yeah. Me too. But I’m gonna force myself to wait until 5:00 today.
It’s no secret around here how much I love me some brown liquor. Bourbon, Whiskey, Brandy, Scotch, heck. I’ll even dabble in Rum from time to time. I absolutely love the warming, molasses-y, rich, oak-y, even lightly peaty, full-bodied flavor of all the brown liquors. All the time.
However, when 70 degree days grace us more often than not come springtime, I can’t resist starting my cocktails off with gin or vodka as the base. Those warm breezes wafting hyacinth throug the air just SCREAM for something lighter. I know I’ll return to the brandys and bourbons as soon as my tootsies are propped by the campfire, but until then I set off on a course to find the perfect Friday afternoon boat cruising accessory for my princess seat in the front of the pontoon.
Today’s creation is officially on the rotation. Just before we head out to putt putt around the lakes, I’m filling boat bags, grabbing sunscreen, making easy snacks, grabbing a deck of cards or Trivial Pursuit so I can kick Mr. Musky’s butt at something, throwing in the speaker for some tunes, trying to remember a wine opener, oh yeah – we need wine glasses, and do we have enough ice? Is there a garbage bag on the boat? What about paper towels?
Phew. Makes me sleepy just remembering all the to-dos before fixing a “kicker” and heading down to the dock.
That’s why simplicity is key, ingredients must always be on hand, and why this Lemon Maple Fizzer will join me on repeat this summer.
I made this a few weeks ago and instantly fell in love. It’s pretty, no? Makes you think you’re going to take a good long slurp of some refreshing lemonade, yes?
While it is undoubtedly lemony, the secondary flavors immediately start you guessing. It’s not just lemony. The maple simple syrup REALLY throws a happy twisty party into this one. There’s just enough gin-bite to remind you it isn’t suitable for your toddler’s sippy cup. And the four ounces of bubbly water play games with your tastebuds as you sip it through the straw, which is a must. Definitely have some straws and ball jars on hand for this one to add to the front porch, lazy dogdays vibe.
Mr. Musky liked this. My college student loved it. Even our neighbor Pete liked it. I highly recommend trying this one out. Chances are, you already have all the ingredients on hand. Give it a go this weekend while you grill something yummy with your people. We’re making Green Egg Pizzas on Sunday. Can’t wait!
Cheers, and Happy Apéritif Friday!
